The 3rd annual Conference hosted by the European University of Technology and organized by the European Culture and Technology Laboratory ‘ECT Lab+’ aims to bring together experts from the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Technology, and other fields exploring ways of enquiry that enrich (non-)positivist ways of knowing as well as post-structuralist critique towards them. Given the political, representative and epistemic crises of the current times, there is a need for transdisciplinary responses to overcome siloed thinking of academic fields of study and offer solutions by revisiting questions of speculation at the basis of science, engineering, design and the arts. Speculation can provide analytical, imaginative, political and experimental means as well as inspire the production of artifacts (engineering, design, arts, crafts) to get beyond the current epistemic Krisis. At the very same time, given its role in economics, colonialism and war, speculation (both as Speculatio and Speculum) itself, can and ought be under critique.

In a rapidly changing world ever causing insecurity and anguish for the future, Schläfli symbol {5,3} is intended as a state of absolute predictability. The project was inspired by Donna Haraway’s text ”A Cyborg Manifesto” (1985). Following Haraway’s argument for how the postmodern body is slowly but surely turning into a “hybrid of machine and organism, a creation of social reality and fiction”, the project develops a series of 3D digital forms produced from points of the same of […]

Poe’s Tree

This artwork is inspired by the short story "The Gold-Bug" by Edgar Alan Poe. The story follows William Legrand, his servant Jupiter and an unnamed narrator on their quest to uncover a buried treasure. Poe took advantage of the popularity of cryptography as he was writing the "The Gold-Bug" and his story revolves around the team trying to solve a cipher. The characters in the story follow a simple substitution cipher to decode a message that eventually leads them to the treasure. With this project, the aim was to re-encode the decrypted text into a digital form and turn it…

It draws upon previous experimentation with image-to-text models using as input text descriptions of the Eastern Mediterranean region. The resulting imagery, however, bears little, if any, resemblance to the landscape […]
