Kafka’s Path
Kafka’s Path
This artwork is inspired by Metamorphosis, a novella written by Franz Kafka.
Metamorphosis tells the story of salesman Gregor Samsa, who wakes one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a huge insect (German ungeheures Ungeziefer, literally “monstrous vermin”) and subsequently struggles to adjust to this new condition. The story has various interpretations. The main themes we are exploring are isolation, family rejection and struggle for acceptance.
Our aim with this project was to visualize the path taken by the insect, as outlined by Kafka, and re-purpose it in various 3d scanned bedrooms.
In order for this project to be achieved, the following process was used:
A room is scanned and turned into a cloud mesh.
We overlay the movement path of the insect into the 3d space, creating a unique path depended on the object’s placement and orientation.
The cloud mesh is stylized and rendered in Houdini.
