Ecologies of Sound: Soundscape Composition as an Artistic Practice
The series of workshops Ecologies of Sound: Soundscape Composition as an Artistic Practice invites artists from any medium and practice to explore acoustic ecology, soundscape theory, and soundscape composition. The workshops are part of Dimitris Savva’s postdoctoral research, “Cyprus Forest Soundscapes and Acoustic Ecology,” which explores and documents significant forest soundscapes in Ethniko Dasos Troodous. This research involves creating an audio archive, and through seminars, soundwalks, and workshops utilizing this archive, aims to raise awareness of acoustic ecology among art practitioners and the general public in Cyprus.
Artists are invited to develop projects integrating their artistic practice with soundscape composition. Possible approaches include combining soundscapes with dance, fine art, multimedia, photography, video art, theatrical monologues, or music.
Participants will work with recordings from the Troodos Forest Soundscape Recordings Archive, developed as part of the postdoctoral research Cyprus Forest Soundscapes and Acoustic Ecology. Each artwork will be shaped by the artists’ engagement with acoustic ecology, drawing inspiration from nature, sound, and environmental awareness.
The final works will be presented at a public event at MAD Lab (Media Arts and Design Research Lab), providing a platform for artistic exchange and audience engagement.
